Where to Buy Fabric Face Masks

The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has advised all Americans to wear cloth face masks while out in public to help minimize the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). These precautions were put in place to prevent the spread of the virus by those who are infected with it and are asymptomatic. The CDC advised wearing a cloth face covering when you’re out in public places, like grocery stores and pharmacies, where the social distancing guidelines are harder to follow. For many before the pandemic, face masks were not a part of their at-home collection. Luckily, a selection of retailers have now made protective face coverings available for purchase. For those who do not have masks already or prefer not to make a DIY face mask, buying one is an easy alternative.

In order to properly wear a face mask, it must fit closely against the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include more than one layer of fabric, allow for breathing, and be able to be washed without getting damaged. It’s worth noting that while these cloth face coverings are not medical grade masks like the N95 respirators and surgical masks, which are being reserved for healthcare workers, they are still useful to put on when out in public. Wearing a cloth mask will not ensure protection against ingesting droplets, but it’s a precautionary safety measure worth taking.

Ahead is a curated list of face masks that are available to buy online, including companies and brands that are doing their part by donating proceeds and masks to charities and hospitals to help those working against the virus. If you don’t already have a mask or need another one for yourself or a loved one, shop these picks now and help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Save time in the kitchen with this easy, halfway homemade, one dish keto chicken casserole that's ready in just 30 minutes.

This recipe was originally published on February 10, 2018.

You know those days where your kids/co-workers/spouse/the general public are “exceeding the limitations of your medication” and the thought of making dinner just makes your eye twitch? (Bonus points if you can name that quote!)

I know I’m not the only one. Days like those I need quick and easy meals that don’t require a bunch of dishes to clean up. Recipes like this one are perfect for those times.

A rotisserie chicken, store bought spinach artichoke dip, and 3 basic ingredients come together for a show stopping keto chicken casserole that your whole family is going to love.

This Will Be Your Favorite New Keto Chicken Casserole

And here’s why:

  • Only 6 ingredients needed
  • Eat sooner since it only takes half an hour to make
  • Minimal cleanup (a one-pot meal if you use an oven safe skillet!)
  • Rich, creamy, and cheesy
  • Kid approved
  • Easily double or triple the recipe for a crowd
  • Only 8 net carbs for a hearty and comforting keto casserole

How To Make This Keto Spinach Artichoke Chicken Casserole At Home

Making this keto chicken casserole is a breeze to whip up. If you have an oven safe skillet, it can even be a (keto) one pot meal recipe!

This recipe is definitely one I’d categorize as halfway homemade! As much as I love cooking from scratch, it’s not always realistic.

Using pre-cooked, store bought, or even rotisserie chicken makes this recipe come together in no time.

Of course, if you don’t have any cooked chicken handy, you could easily boil chicken breasts on the stove or use your Instant Pot to cook some quickly.

Want an Instant Pot version of this recipe? Check out my cookbook!

store bought spinach artichoke dip and frozen broccoli (steamed) also cut down on the prep time for this low carb chicken casserole recipe.

I like to use the La Terra Fina brand of spinach artichoke dip that I find at Costco but I hear Trader Joe’s has a great one also. Of course, you can use whichever brand you can find or prefer!

Preparation takes just 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how fast you work in the kitchen. Simply heat up your dip in a skillet (non-stick works best), whisk in some cream, and then toss with the broccoli and chicken. Bake in a casserole dish for 20 minutes, top with cheese, and broil till bubbly.

It really doesn’t get any easier!

How To Serve Your Spinach Artichoke Chicken Casserole

Because this dish has ample protein, fat, dairy, and even veggies, there is really no need to make a huge spread.

This keto chicken casserole is really a fully meal in one dish. However, our mind can play tricks on us and make us think we’re not getting enough to eat if we don’t have something to accompany our main meal.

Here are a few side options to round out your meal without blowing your calories:

  • Simple dressed greens- try spinach and arugula drizzled in a little olive oil, red or balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper.
  • Light Caesar salad
  • Steamed asparagus
  • Roasted carrots

This low carb and keto club sandwich puff is a great finger sandwich or party appetizer! Cut into various sizes for party snacks or serve in slices for lunch. Whether you're hosting a shower or packing a picnic, this keto club sandwich puff is the perfect finger food to serve!

With warmer weather right around the corner, I’m dreaming of picnics, pool days, and zoo trips!

Maybe you have bridal showers, baby showers, or other parties to host this Spring and are already thinking about what kind of food to serve.

Whether you’re heading out to the zoo for the day or showering a mom-to-be, finger foods are a must have.

Finger sandwiches, petit fours, and cupcakes are great, but not when you’re trying to eat keto. Of course, it’s always good to have a mix of foods for your guests but when keto is as popular as it is these days, there’s no worry when it comes to adding low carb foods to your buffet!

This recipe for a keto club sandwich puff is a low carb version of a classic Southern puff pastry finger sandwich. They’re excellent for meal prep, lunches, parties, or an easy weeknight meal!

You’re Going To Love This Keto Club Sandwich Puff

And here’s why:

  • Easy to prepare
  • Great for lunch boxes, meal prep, or party appetizers
  • Customize with your favorite deli meats
  • Simple but delicious, everyone is sure to love them
  • Kid friendly
  • Budget friendly

How To Make Your Own Low Carb Club Sandwich Bake

Without crescent rolls or puff pastry, you may be wondering how you can make such a dish keto friendly?

That’s easy! We use fat head dough in place of the high carb alternatives.

I like to use the same fat head variation that I do in my keto pigs in a blanket. It’s simple to prepare, lower calorie than most other fat head recipes on the internet, and puffs up nicely to mimic bread.

Simply stuff the prepared dough with a few ounces of chopped deli meat, bacon, cheese, and sugar free honey mustard, pinch it together, and bake.

It’s so stinkin’ simple but sometimes the simple recipes are the best recipes!

How To Serve Your Keto Club Sandwich Puff

As I mentioned before, this keto club sandwich recipe is great for a variety of meals or activities.

You can cut it into small bite sized squares for a party or slice it in sticks for kids’ lunches

And, it can easily be doubled or tripled if you’re feeding a crowd.

I like to serve my keto club sandwich puffs with a fresh salad, fruit, and some sugar free honey mustard or ranch dressing on the side for dipping.

As much as I love it warm out of the oven, it’s also good served chilled (or room temperature) if you need to make it ahead of time.

All in all, this keto club sandwich is an ideal keto party food!

This low carb and keto club sandwich puff is a great finger sandwich or party appetizer! Cut into various sizes for party snacks or serve in slices for lunch. Whether you're hosting a shower or packing a picnic, this keto club sandwich puff is the perfect finger food to serve!

Ingredients and Substitutions

You may be wondering if deli meat is keto or is sugar free honey mustard hard to find?

The short answer: yes it is and no, it’s not!

Deli meat is great for a ketogenic diet. Just be sure you’re buying no sugar added deli meat and if you’re budget allows, nitrate and nitrite free. It’s easier than you may think, just read your labels and avoid unnecessary ingredients!

I really like the Boar’s Head and Applegate brands but you can always check your local deli counter for options that may be relative to where you live as deli meat brands can often be a regional item.

Costco and Trader Joe’s also carry high quality deli meats in their pre-packaged section.

As for sugar free honey mustard, I highly recommend the G. Hughe’s brand. It tastes delicious, is easy to find at most stores, and is affordable. Of course, you could swap the honey mustard with some of my homemade sugar free chick-fil-a sauce and it would be just as yummy!

How Long Does It Take to See Results After Exercising?

Results

Working out is great for our physical health — strength training and cardio, for example, can help improve your metabolic rate — as well as our mental health. HIIT is effective for burning fat, and if you’re focused on booty gains, sprints and inclines on the treadmill are your best friends. But how soon after you start working out will you start to see results?

We want to preface this by saying that everyone’s fitness or weight-loss journey is different, and everyone’s body is different. So no two people’s results will be the same. That being said, we spoke to three experts on what to expect results-wise from exercise depending on your goals — because everyone’s goals are inevitably different, too — and we broke it down for you right here.

How Soon Can You Lose Weight After Exercising?

NASM-certified personal trainer Guychard Codio, cofounder of New York City Personal Training, told POPSUGAR that first, you can’t work out and eat in a caloric surplus and expect to lose weight; you have to burn more calories than you take in (learn more about eating in a caloric deficit here). Healthy eating habits, he said, have to be an integral part of your workout routine. In terms of losing weight through exercise, he said people can start seeing results in two to three weeks. But, he said, if you want to kept the weight off, you’ll need a routine that progresses slowly and steadily instead of one where you’re going all out.

For example, trying to lose 20 pounds in a month isn’t a realistic goal, he said, which is what he sees some people do before weddings and some professional athletes like boxers or bodybuilders do before competitions. If you have more intense parts of your workout and diet plan where you cut calories from 2,500 to 1,200 for two months but want to maintain your weight-loss process, you should gradually bring those calories back up and increase your exercise routine as you do that, he explained. Slow and steady wins the race. (Just check out some of our POPSUGAR weight-loss success stories and you’ll see proof.)

Ashley Kelly, NASM-certified personal trainer for Bach, told POPSUGAR she puts her clients through a six-week program if their goal is to lose weight through exercise, with three weeks of introductory training to get them used to an elevated heart rate, one lighter week, and two higher-intensity strength-training weeks. She’ll usually do a body fat test before and after the program to see their progress.

Ashleigh Kast, NASM-certified trainer at Performix House and Ladder coach, gave POPSUGAR a scenario in which people focus on exercise alone to lose weight (and by losing weight, she means losing fat). “If you’re trying to lose fat by working out, you’re going to need to establish a caloric deficit through working out alone,” she explained, but she stressed that “the amount of working out you need to do in a week without addressing food to maintain that caloric deficit can be very stressful.”

Eating in a caloric deficit and exercising is what’s recommended for weight loss because you’d have to burn 500 calories per day in your workouts for seven days just to lose a pound a week, which isn’t a superrealistic goal. Plus, it’s not recommended that you work out every day. And “in some cases, where calories are still very high, it’s simply not enough to create the necessary deficit,” Kast said.

All the trainers we spoke to said they ultimately couldn’t give a definitive answer for weight-loss results since it depends on a person’s individual goals, body type, weight, age, and other factors. In general, though, they all agreed that, for healthy weight loss, it will take at least a few weeks to really see results and that an aggressive approach in a short amount of time isn’t something you can sustain. You can healthily lose half a pound to two pounds a week, Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios and ACSM-certified personal trainer, told POPSUGAR in a previous interview. So after five weeks, you may see a loss of up to 10 pounds.

How Soon Can You Gain Muscle After Exercising?

Kast said that, when completing a bodybuilding or strength-training cycle of 10 to 12 weeks with at least three lifting days per week, it’s not uncommon to see a muscle gain of five to seven pounds. Codio said it’s going to be easier for someone who already has some muscle to add to that muscle. For this person, it normally takes about two weeks for them to see results. For someone who hasn’t worked out before, it may take up to two months — and this also, he noted, varies depending on how much muscle you’re trying to put on.

Similarly to what she said about seeing weight-loss results in six weeks — which she named as a general timeline for her clients — Kelly said, in her opinion, you can start to see muscle changes in six weeks. This is a bit easier to do than lose weight since most people can just focus on heavy lifting, she explained. Eating in a caloric deficit isn’t important; you actually need to be eating enough carbs and protein to help repair muscles. Kast further noted that people who weight train and don’t address nutrition will have a harder time achieving and sustaining results. (If you’re interested in the proper macros you may need to gain muscle, check out our guide on that.)

Bottom Line: Gaining Muscle Helps You Lose Weight

The more muscle you have, the easier it is for your body to lose fat and burn calories throughout the day, Codio said. In terms of losing fat, muscle will help with that, so if your goal is to lose weight by working out, gaining muscle to some capacity is part of the process. Kelly tells her clients to focus on the way their bodies look — definition in their arms and legs, for example — and feel progress-wise as opposed to the number on the scale. “If you try to go on the scale while you’re developing muscle mass, you might see either no change in the weight, or you might see that your pounds go up. So, see how you feel in your clothes and see how you feel in the mirror,” she advised.

Whether your goal is to lose weight or gain muscle through exercise, Kast said it’s most realistic for people to work out three to four times per week (don’t forget about rest days!) with strength training and high-intensity cardio and an emphasis on nutrition, especially monitoring and managing calories to find out what works for you. You also have to manage stress and get plenty of sleep. As with making a change in any aspect of your life, Kelly noted, “if you’re consistently doing something and wait at least 21 to 42 days, then you will see changes.” Check out some of our workout plans below for inspiration on where to start:

With a few basic low carb ingredients and about 20 minutes, you can enjoy some homemade keto fried shrimp. There’s even a recipe for homemade sugar free cocktail sauce included for your dipping pleasure!

Basic low carb ingredients and 20 minutes are all you need for these low carb coconut fried shrimp. A recipe for sugar free cocktail sauce is included too!

This recipe originally appeared on the blog on March 29, 2018.

Close your eyes. Pretend your toes are in the sand, the waves are crashing, and the salty breeze is blowing through your hair. Are you relaxed now?

That is my paradise.

Since I am landlocked living here in Kentucky, I have to bring the beach to me whenever I get the chance. Especially this year since I probably won’t get to take my annual summer beach trip!

These little low carb coconut fried shrimp help get me through these long, boring, and dreary days before summer.

I’ve also included an easy recipe for homemade sugar free cocktail sauce for your dipping pleasures!

So, grab your rum, little paper umbrellas, tell Alexa to play some Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville and get ready to feast on some tropical keto coconut fried shrimp!

Basic low carb ingredients and 20 minutes are all you need for these low carb coconut fried shrimp. A recipe for sugar free cocktail sauce is included too!

  • Quick prep and fast cook times get you eating sooner
  • Only 3 net carbs per serving

Making Your Own Low Carb Coconut Fried Shrimp

This recipe really could not be more straightforward. Even the most novice of home cooks can enjoy these homemade low carb coconut fried shrimp!

Start by preparing a simple dredging station: a dish for the egg and a dish for the breading.

After you rinse and pat dry your shrimp, toss them in the arrowroot powder. Then dredge, or drag, the shrimp through the egg and then the breading.

Using kitchen tongs will really help keep your fingers clean but by all means, use your best God given kitchen tools if needed!

Use a frying pan to fry your shrimp in batches. This only takes about 3 to 4 minutes per batch since shrimp cook quickly!

Be sure not to crowd the pan- you don’t want to steam the shrimp and make all the breading fall off.

And voilà, dinner is done in less than 30 minutes!

What Is Arrowroot Powder, Where Can You Buy It, And Can You Use Something Else Instead?

That’s a good question and one I get asked frequently when I include arrowroot in a recipe.

Arrowroot is essentially a grain free cornstarch.

Cornstarch, obviously, comes from corn. While it is technically macro friendly, it is still a corn product and one I would not advise using if you’re trying to follow a ketogenic diet.

Arrowroot is a plant that looks similar to a ginger root, jicama, or parsnip. Sometimes you’ll hear arrowroot referred to powderor starchbut they are the same thing.

It can be used to thicken sauces and soups like xanthan gum but it can also be used to adhere coatings similar to white flour, like we’re doing here in this low carb coconut fried shrimp recipe.

You can find arrowroot in the spice aisle of your grocery store and on Amazon in bulk.

If you cannot find arrowroot, for purposes of this recipe only, you can substitute arrowroot with baking powder. DO NOT try and use almond flour or coconut flour! Essentially, you want the coconut coating to have something to grab on to, and stay crunchy, in your shrimp.

Can You Have Fried Foods On Keto?

Yes, you most certainly may! The key to making your favorite fried foods keto friendly is to use keto friendly oils!

Avocado oil, coconut oil, and even peanut oil are great when you’re frying in large batches!

Don’t be afraid to save leftover oil too! Run the cooled oil through a fine strainer and save it in a mason jar for your next fry job! You’ll save your pennies that way!
