How Long Does It Take to See Results After Exercising?

Results

Working out is great for our physical health — strength training and cardio, for example, can help improve your metabolic rate — as well as our mental health. HIIT is effective for burning fat, and if you’re focused on booty gains, sprints and inclines on the treadmill are your best friends. But how soon after you start working out will you start to see results?

We want to preface this by saying that everyone’s fitness or weight-loss journey is different, and everyone’s body is different. So no two people’s results will be the same. That being said, we spoke to three experts on what to expect results-wise from exercise depending on your goals — because everyone’s goals are inevitably different, too — and we broke it down for you right here.

How Soon Can You Lose Weight After Exercising?

NASM-certified personal trainer Guychard Codio, cofounder of New York City Personal Training, told POPSUGAR that first, you can’t work out and eat in a caloric surplus and expect to lose weight; you have to burn more calories than you take in (learn more about eating in a caloric deficit here). Healthy eating habits, he said, have to be an integral part of your workout routine. In terms of losing weight through exercise, he said people can start seeing results in two to three weeks. But, he said, if you want to kept the weight off, you’ll need a routine that progresses slowly and steadily instead of one where you’re going all out.

For example, trying to lose 20 pounds in a month isn’t a realistic goal, he said, which is what he sees some people do before weddings and some professional athletes like boxers or bodybuilders do before competitions. If you have more intense parts of your workout and diet plan where you cut calories from 2,500 to 1,200 for two months but want to maintain your weight-loss process, you should gradually bring those calories back up and increase your exercise routine as you do that, he explained. Slow and steady wins the race. (Just check out some of our POPSUGAR weight-loss success stories and you’ll see proof.)

Ashley Kelly, NASM-certified personal trainer for Bach, told POPSUGAR she puts her clients through a six-week program if their goal is to lose weight through exercise, with three weeks of introductory training to get them used to an elevated heart rate, one lighter week, and two higher-intensity strength-training weeks. She’ll usually do a body fat test before and after the program to see their progress.

Ashleigh Kast, NASM-certified trainer at Performix House and Ladder coach, gave POPSUGAR a scenario in which people focus on exercise alone to lose weight (and by losing weight, she means losing fat). “If you’re trying to lose fat by working out, you’re going to need to establish a caloric deficit through working out alone,” she explained, but she stressed that “the amount of working out you need to do in a week without addressing food to maintain that caloric deficit can be very stressful.”

Eating in a caloric deficit and exercising is what’s recommended for weight loss because you’d have to burn 500 calories per day in your workouts for seven days just to lose a pound a week, which isn’t a superrealistic goal. Plus, it’s not recommended that you work out every day. And “in some cases, where calories are still very high, it’s simply not enough to create the necessary deficit,” Kast said.

All the trainers we spoke to said they ultimately couldn’t give a definitive answer for weight-loss results since it depends on a person’s individual goals, body type, weight, age, and other factors. In general, though, they all agreed that, for healthy weight loss, it will take at least a few weeks to really see results and that an aggressive approach in a short amount of time isn’t something you can sustain. You can healthily lose half a pound to two pounds a week, Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios and ACSM-certified personal trainer, told POPSUGAR in a previous interview. So after five weeks, you may see a loss of up to 10 pounds.

How Soon Can You Gain Muscle After Exercising?

Kast said that, when completing a bodybuilding or strength-training cycle of 10 to 12 weeks with at least three lifting days per week, it’s not uncommon to see a muscle gain of five to seven pounds. Codio said it’s going to be easier for someone who already has some muscle to add to that muscle. For this person, it normally takes about two weeks for them to see results. For someone who hasn’t worked out before, it may take up to two months — and this also, he noted, varies depending on how much muscle you’re trying to put on.

Similarly to what she said about seeing weight-loss results in six weeks — which she named as a general timeline for her clients — Kelly said, in her opinion, you can start to see muscle changes in six weeks. This is a bit easier to do than lose weight since most people can just focus on heavy lifting, she explained. Eating in a caloric deficit isn’t important; you actually need to be eating enough carbs and protein to help repair muscles. Kast further noted that people who weight train and don’t address nutrition will have a harder time achieving and sustaining results. (If you’re interested in the proper macros you may need to gain muscle, check out our guide on that.)

Bottom Line: Gaining Muscle Helps You Lose Weight

The more muscle you have, the easier it is for your body to lose fat and burn calories throughout the day, Codio said. In terms of losing fat, muscle will help with that, so if your goal is to lose weight by working out, gaining muscle to some capacity is part of the process. Kelly tells her clients to focus on the way their bodies look — definition in their arms and legs, for example — and feel progress-wise as opposed to the number on the scale. “If you try to go on the scale while you’re developing muscle mass, you might see either no change in the weight, or you might see that your pounds go up. So, see how you feel in your clothes and see how you feel in the mirror,” she advised.

Whether your goal is to lose weight or gain muscle through exercise, Kast said it’s most realistic for people to work out three to four times per week (don’t forget about rest days!) with strength training and high-intensity cardio and an emphasis on nutrition, especially monitoring and managing calories to find out what works for you. You also have to manage stress and get plenty of sleep. As with making a change in any aspect of your life, Kelly noted, “if you’re consistently doing something and wait at least 21 to 42 days, then you will see changes.” Check out some of our workout plans below for inspiration on where to start:

With a few basic low carb ingredients and about 20 minutes, you can enjoy some homemade keto fried shrimp. There’s even a recipe for homemade sugar free cocktail sauce included for your dipping pleasure!

Basic low carb ingredients and 20 minutes are all you need for these low carb coconut fried shrimp. A recipe for sugar free cocktail sauce is included too!

This recipe originally appeared on the blog on March 29, 2018.

Close your eyes. Pretend your toes are in the sand, the waves are crashing, and the salty breeze is blowing through your hair. Are you relaxed now?

That is my paradise.

Since I am landlocked living here in Kentucky, I have to bring the beach to me whenever I get the chance. Especially this year since I probably won’t get to take my annual summer beach trip!

These little low carb coconut fried shrimp help get me through these long, boring, and dreary days before summer.

I’ve also included an easy recipe for homemade sugar free cocktail sauce for your dipping pleasures!

So, grab your rum, little paper umbrellas, tell Alexa to play some Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville and get ready to feast on some tropical keto coconut fried shrimp!

Basic low carb ingredients and 20 minutes are all you need for these low carb coconut fried shrimp. A recipe for sugar free cocktail sauce is included too!

These Are The Best Keto Coconut Shrimp Ever!

And here’s why:

  • Simple and straight forward recipe for all home cooks
  • Basic low carb ingredients
  • Quick prep and fast cook times get you eating sooner
  • Only 3 net carbs per serving
  • Dairy free, Paleo, Whole30, vegetarian
  • Kid friendly meal idea
  • Homemade sugar free cocktail sauce recipe included

Making Your Own Low Carb Coconut Fried Shrimp

This recipe really could not be more straightforward. Even the most novice of home cooks can enjoy these homemade low carb coconut fried shrimp!

Start by preparing a simple dredging station: a dish for the egg and a dish for the breading.

After you rinse and pat dry your shrimp, toss them in the arrowroot powder. Then dredge, or drag, the shrimp through the egg and then the breading.

Using kitchen tongs will really help keep your fingers clean but by all means, use your best God given kitchen tools if needed!

Use a frying pan to fry your shrimp in batches. This only takes about 3 to 4 minutes per batch since shrimp cook quickly!

Be sure not to crowd the pan- you don’t want to steam the shrimp and make all the breading fall off.

And voilà, dinner is done in less than 30 minutes!

What Is Arrowroot Powder, Where Can You Buy It, And Can You Use Something Else Instead?

That’s a good question and one I get asked frequently when I include arrowroot in a recipe.

Arrowroot is essentially a grain free cornstarch.

Cornstarch, obviously, comes from corn. While it is technically macro friendly, it is still a corn product and one I would not advise using if you’re trying to follow a ketogenic diet.

Arrowroot is a plant that looks similar to a ginger root, jicama, or parsnip. Sometimes you’ll hear arrowroot referred to powderor starchbut they are the same thing.

It can be used to thicken sauces and soups like xanthan gum but it can also be used to adhere coatings similar to white flour, like we’re doing here in this low carb coconut fried shrimp recipe.

You can find arrowroot in the spice aisle of your grocery store and on Amazon in bulk.

If you cannot find arrowroot, for purposes of this recipe only, you can substitute arrowroot with baking powder. DO NOT try and use almond flour or coconut flour! Essentially, you want the coconut coating to have something to grab on to, and stay crunchy, in your shrimp.

Can You Have Fried Foods On Keto?

Yes, you most certainly may! The key to making your favorite fried foods keto friendly is to use keto friendly oils!

Avocado oil, coconut oil, and even peanut oil are great when you’re frying in large batches!

Don’t be afraid to save leftover oil too! Run the cooled oil through a fine strainer and save it in a mason jar for your next fry job! You’ll save your pennies that way!

How to Fall Asleep Right Away

Shot of a young woman sleeping with a mask on in bed

Is your anxiety interfering with your ability to fall asleep night after night? Relying on over-the-counter meds to reach the land of nod? Just not getting the sleep your body and brain need? If this sounds all too familiar, we have a breathing trick to help you fall asleep quickly — no prescriptions required.

The exercise is called the 4-7-8 technique, and Andrew Weil, MD, founder and director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, calls it a “natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.” Study after study has linked meditation to lowered stress levels, and this easy-to-follow exercise will help you reap some of the de-stressing benefits that come along with consistent meditation practice.

Beyond bedtime, Dr. Weil recommends performing this exercise whenever dealing with a stressful situation. The next time you can’t curb sugar cravings, get into a fight with your partner, or can’t hit the hay because you’re overwhelmed, try it out for yourself. You’ll start feeling more relaxed immediately.

The 4-7-8 Method

  1. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise.
  2. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
  3. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
  4. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  5. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.
  6. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat three more times for a total of four cycles.

Blake Lively’s Hairstylist Sends Her Hair Dye at Home

US actor Ryan Reynolds and his wife actress Blake Lively attend the premiere of

Blake Lively is putting her marriage to what some might call the ultimate test: can Ryan Reynolds successfully dye her hair? The actress recently received a care package from her colorist, Rona O’Connor, with all the supplies needed for upkeep. Get your gloves ready, Reynolds, it’s time for hair care.

“Sweet B! Read options A+B with Ryan. I’m leaning towards A for simplicity — LOL. But think we may need B,” O’Connor wrote on a note with the kit, which included a brush, clips, bottles, and color options. “To happy colorings during Covid 19!” She added: “Sending love and good wishes to you all!”

“You are an actual earth angel,” Lively wrote to O’Connor on Instagram. “Thank you for surprising me with a handmade hair color kit. The fact that you trust @vancityreynolds to get this right, makes me concerned for your sanity. But who needs hair anyway!?”

Like many of us, Lively is relying on her partner for beauty help during this stay-at-home period. (Although the specially tailored kit is definitely a unique perk!) Our advice? Ryan, make sure to keep the dye off Blake’s skin, and don’t be afraid to watch many, many styling tutorials before taking the plunge. Oh, and please capture the whole process on camera. You know, for educational purposes.

Take-Out Style Low Carb Beef and Broccoli

If you’re craving Chinese takeout, this version of low carb beef and broccoli is sure to satisfy. Grab some chopsticks and your Instant Pot and have your favorite takeout ready to eat in less time than it takes the delivery driver!

Better than takeout low carb beef and broccoli. Make it in the Instant Pot or crock pot for an easy dairy free keto dinner.

This recipe was originally shared on February 19, 2018.

Chinese take-out used to be one of my all time favorite ways to spend a night in. I would order four or five different dishes and share it with everyone while we watched a movie. The good life, ya know?

The beef and broccoli is one of my go-to’s. It’s so bad but so good, right? I used to think it was worth the take-out hangover (yes, that’s a thing).

Unfortunately, Chinese food is absolutely NOT keto friendly or even low carb. Too bad it’s full of preservatives, low quality meat, thickeners, and loads of carbs.

Even if you try to order something very plain at a Chinese restaurant, it’s still what I’d call a “high risk option”. Meaning that you really don’t know what you’re getting.

I love Chinese takeout so much though that I have dedicated several recipes on my blog to help you recreate some of your favorites at home, 100% keto friendly! See a full list of those recipes at the bottom of this post!

This low carb beef and broccoli recipe rivals any cheap takeout restaurant and it can be made in your instant pot!

Get your chopsticks ready friends, this is one keto Chinese recipe you don’t want to skip!

Better than takeout low carb beef and broccoli. Make it in the Instant Pot or crock pot for an easy dairy free keto dinner.

This Is The Best Low Carb Beef and Broccoli Ever

And this is why:

  • Instant pot and crock-pot recipe means less clean up and fuss for you
  • Kid approved
  • Common ingredients for low carb Asian cooking
  • Dairy free, paleo friendly, Whole30 approved (when you omit the sweetener)
  • Takes only 15 minutes to cook
  • Better than your cheap takeout spot

Making Your Keto Beef and Broccoli At Home

One thing I love about being a food blogger/recipe creator is the challenge in recreating restaurant favorites.

Chinese food is always a top contender when I ask the people what they want. And I oblige because…Chinese food, duh!

This low carb beef and broccoli is truly a breeze to make at home.

In the time it would take you to call your local spot, place your order, pay, and then wait for delivery, you could have made this homemade version. Seriously.

I’ve written the recipe for the Instant Pot, it’s even included in my cookbook (do you have a copy yet?!), but you could totally make this on the stove top or crockpot. Check out the “notes” section of the recipe card for more information.

The key to a good beef and broccoli is to slice your flank steak as thin as you can! You an even ask your grocery store butcher to do this for you.

You could even use shaved beef steak if you can’t get a flank steak, but I’d recommend flank for the best results.

Other than that, the instant pot will do the rest of the work for you. I call that a win!

Serving Your Low Carb Beef and Broccoli

What’s Chinese food without rice and a fortune cookie?

I can’t give you a keto fortune cookie but I can give you some awesome keto Chinese recipes to serve with your low carb beef and broccoli!

Ingredients and Substitutions

Not sure what fish sauce is? Don’t have arrowroot on hand? Here’s a list of substitutions you can make in this recipe:

  • Fish sauce– this is an ingredient common in Asian cooking. You can find it on the same aisle as soy sauce at just about all grocery stores. Don’t omit this ingredient, it adds an important flavor in the final sauce! Just hold your nose while you measure it- it stinks!
  • Arrowroot– this is a grain free cornstarch substitute. It acts as a thickener for the sauce. You can read more about it in this post. If you don’t have any, use xanthan gum instead. You won’t make a slurry, so omit the water, and you’ll use a lot less. Start with ½ teaspoon and work your way up from there until you reach a sticky sauce consistency.
  • Soy sauce– use coconut aminos if you’re gluten free. However, I’d recommend using slightly less because it is much saltier than soy.
